Hiryu Bushido Kai Who Are We? Hiryu means flying dragon and is pronounced Hiryu (here-you). There is no other symbolism to the dragon other than the fact that it reflects our mission and approach to training. I retained this symbol from my early days (1959) as it represented the Judo club in which I had studied. My Sensei, Art Martel, had given me permission to carry forward this logo in any of my future martial art activities. It is an honour and loyalty to a past master instructor--the DRAGON CONTINUES TO FLY. The dragon reflects our fighting principles. It is not a real animal and therefore reflects the personality of the student, allowing a large degree of creativeness at the appropriate time. The dragon represents the unseen internal world of strength and power. It generates internal strength (KI) through soft breathing which makes it flexible. A dragon's movements are soft and circular yet strikes with impressive impact. Using soft and hard techniques the dragon grabs with its claws to pull or lock its attacker. As the dragon whips its tail for wave-like power, the student learns to throw their hips. The dragons ability to fight in the air, or on the ground, is reflected by how one learns to throw and grapple with the assailant. The illusion of the dragon is made real through the efforts of each student. Its strength and power to do good for others is wholly dependent upon the integrity of each individual. Bushido is suggestive of the code of thought and behaviour of the Samurai Warrior. Unlike what you might expect, the code is to heighten morals and emphasize one's responsibility to family and those in authority and country. The art of laying down ones arms is the goal, not aggression. Kai simply means association or organization.
